Fusing concepts from neurobiology and psychoanalysis, these biomorphic assemblages probe our collective desire for ritual and meaning. Religious symbolism from my upbringing is co-opted and redefined for the present moment, where technological advancement and ecological disaster are revealing humanity’s interconnection with the environment. Constructed from industrial detritus, the layered sculptures become power objects of everyday life, existing as altars to the sacred and profane. Electromechanical elements, such as pumps and bug zappers, animate the work, while liquids, both natural and synthetic, allow the work to evolve over time. Through their integration with the gallery infrastructure, the sculptures suggest a dependency to a larger system. What results is a worship of continual change and the connections between the human and nonhuman.
